About The Heart Institute of the Caribbean (HIC) is an innovative, dynamic healthcare center that serves as the center of excellence for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), occupational health, diabetes care and general internal medicine in the West Indies. The Heart Institute of the Caribbean is located in Kingston, Jamaica and is the regional center for comprehensive and sophisticated diagnosis and management of all forms of heart diseases. HIC provides expert diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and general medical conditions and consultative opinion locally and also remotely via a network of specialists linked by a global telemedical network. These services were previously not available in Jamaica and the only option for patients in the region was to seek or procure such services in the USA, particularly in Florida.
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death, hospitalization and disability in the West Indies. Among the four leading causes of death in this region in the 1990s are heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. Despite the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, there was previously no identifiable center of excellence in this region for cardiovascular disorders. The Heart Institute of the Caribbean fills this niche and has become the regional leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases. The presence of HIC in Jamaica fulfills several objectives:
1. Ready availability of a state of the art diagnostic and treatment center for heart diseases and improvement in the overall quality of health care in the Caribbean.
2. Opportunity for advanced training of local personnel in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases.
3. Expanded availability of cardiovascular care to remote locations in the Caribbean utilizing the technology of telemedicine and also improved quality of expert care using US trained specialists.
